Flu Update 19 November 2009 Print E-mail
Thursday, 19 November 2009 11:09

Since the start of the fall 2009 semester 315 cadets have reported to the infirmary with flu-like illness.

Currently, one cadet is isolated in the campus infirmary and are being treated while two are on medical leave. All other cadets have been treated and released after being symptom free for 24 hours. All the cases so far have had mild to moderate symptoms. Four have had pneumonia, but no one has required hospitalization.

The infirmary staff is following The Citadel's standing protocol for identifying, isolating and treating all suspected cases of flu.

Symptoms of Swine Flu are the same as those of seasonal flu: fever, and cough and/or sore throat. Some may also have headaches, muscle aches, and fatigue. Like seasonal flu, it is spread by person to person contact and by touching contaminated objects and then touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

All cadets are encouraged to report immediately to the infirmary if they feel sick or exhibit flu-like symptoms so they can be evaluated.

Graduate students and employees are encouraged to stay home if they feel sick and seek medical attention from their physicians.

The college continues to monitor the spread of the virus in the Lowcountry and the state of South Carolina.

How to protect yourself from getting and spreading the flu Print E-mail

Cadets, faculty and staff and visitors to campus are encouraged to take basic precautions to prevent infection and fight the spread of the virus:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your cough with your sleeve, not your hand.
  • Stay home and contact your health care provider if you're sick.
  • Cadets with fever and respiratory symptoms should report to the Infirmary ASAP.
  • Stay away from people who are sick.
  • Eat a healthy diet and get plenty of rest.
  • Avoid touching your eyes/nose/mouth after contact with other people or surfaces which might be contaminated.

The Citadel infirmary has already begun offering annual seasonal flu vaccines to the Corps of Cadets.

Because H1N1 is a new strain of influenza A the vaccine received for traditional flu will not protect a person from getting this flu. The Citadel has Tamiflu on hand and expects to receive the Swine Flu vaccine when it becomes available in October.

The Citadel will conduct monthly tests of its emergency communications sirens and notification systems. The tests will occur at approximately noon on the first day of each month. The tests are part of the college’s BulldogAlert emergency notification system.

The siren will sound for approximately three minutes and has the potential to be heard throughout many areas of the upper peninsula of Charleston and in portions of West of the Ashley River.

BulldogAlert Print E-mail

As part of our ongoing effort to provide the safest environment possible for our students, faculty, and staff, we have implemented a new emergency notification system called BulldogAlert which will allow us to communicate important information to our campus population.

In the event of an emergency, college officials will contact all or select constituents by email, text message and by phone with a recorded message. However, we need your help to make this system work effectively. It is vital that you keep your contact information up-to-date so that we are able to contact you in a crisis. Students may update their information online by logging in to PAWS. Employees should log into WISE. (Note: If you have difficulty logging in to PAWS or WISE, please make sure you have all pop-up blockers disabled.)

Please rest assured that the safety of our cadets, CGC students, faculty and staff is our foremost concern. College officials and our Public Safety department are working together to create a safe environment for our faculty, staff and students, and with your help we will be successful in our efforts.
